Earlier this month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 5,190 people died due to workplace injuries or illnesses in 2016. The figure represents a 7-percent increase in workplace fatalities to the highest rate since 2008. 2016 also saw an increase in overall workplace injury rate from 3.4 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers to 3.6.
Transportation incidents top the list of workplace fatalities in 2016 with 2,083 workers killed, more than double the number of worker fatalities in any other category. In fact, transportation incidents accounted for two out of every five fatal injuries.
